Try searching for Valentine activities for young learners and you will have the problem of too many! There are so many great resources out there, but it can feel overwhelming. I started following other Teacher-Authors on Instagram and my feed is full of their products! Honestly, I love seeing their ideas and have even shared a few on my stories because they are so cute! This all being said, as I review my own products, I have quite a few that align with Valentine's Day and, sadly, most have not done as well as I had hoped. Probably because of the over saturated market! I want to break them down for you today and give some background, so you can decide if these fit the needs of your classroom.
Alphabet Activities
In this category, I currently have 2 resources, but they each have two options within them, so you get a "2 for 1" deal!
Chocolate Box
This Chocolate Box inspired activity includes a matching game or cards for a sensory bin. The matching activity has little chocolates that the students place on their chocolate box page. It's easy to accommodate different learning needs by either matching uppercase letters to uppercase letters, lowercase to lowercase, or uppercase to lowercase. This makes it versatile for preschool aged through first grade, depending on where your students are at.
The sensory bin set are cards with chocolates on them. These could be placed in a bin of dried chickpeas, brown rice, or conversation hearts. That's the lovely thing about sensory bins, is you can pick what goes in it. You could leave it simple with just the chocolate cards or go all out with hearts and valentine toys! Then, students color in the letter they find on their chocolate box page.
Hearts
This activity comes with large hearts to match or a worksheet style heart match. Again, for the large hearts, you can use only uppercase, only lowercase, or a mix. These could also be used in a sensory bin to add to the fun.
The worksheet has two rows of hearts on either side of the page. Students draw lines to connect the uppercase and lowercase letters. Only part of the alphabet is on each page, so students are forced to do it out of order and see if they really know their letters.
Writing Pages
Letters
What is Valentine's without love notes? Now, these don't have to really be love notes, but your students can learn about the parts of a letter and write one to their parents, guardians, siblings, or friends. When I let students write letters as a writing center, they absolutely loved it! They had complete freedom to write to who they wanted and about what they wanted. That independence was powerful and made them eager to write.
Valentines Writing Prompts
This set comes with several writing prompts that focus on love and kindness. Some include:
If I were a Love Bug
Why I Love ____
Things I Love
Each prompt comes with the option of regular or primary writing lines, so they can be used for a variety of ages.
Math Center
Number Puzzles
Number sense and number recognition are important skills for early learners. These puzzles are very simple to help with those skills. The child matches the number with the correct number of love bugs. This resource covers the numbers 0-20, but you could easily just print to 5 or 10 if that is what your students are working on.
Love Bug Hidden Words
These technically are not in my shop yet, but they will be February 8th!!! I'm really excited for these new ones, because it covers a lot of different word types. There will be 4 different options for these resources, but I'll also include them as a bundle if you want to get all 4 for a discount. They will be:
Alphabet (uppercase & lowercase letters)
CVC words
CVCe words
Blends
Activity Packet
If you just want a simple get one resource and cover the basics of reading, writing, and math, I do have an activity packet for just that! There are writing prompts, Roll and Read (alphabet, CVC, and CVCe), math worksheets, "Feed the Love Bug" math activity, and more!
Door Decor
I also have a bulletin board or door decoration set. It works for preschool through sixth grade to say "[insert grade here] is SWEET!" It also includes little candies to write student names on to add your students into the decorations. My students always thought it was so cool to have their name on the door and it didn't add much more work for me, so it was a win-win!
Valentine Cards
Have you also run into the problem of boxes of valentines having amounts that don't match the class size? Most years, my class was around 26-30 students, so a box of 24 wasn't enough, but 48 was a little excessive. This led me to find an alternative- printing my own. This saved me a ton of money and time! I would buy a pack of pencils and print some cards that said "Write on Valentine" with my name printed on it, and I was set! To help others also combat this problem, I created a variety of cards to print. Some go with pencils some with candies. They are made to be flexible to different needs. Just add your name and you're good to go!
